Sou Karkaju Pataxó da Aldeia Pataxó Coroa Vermelha em Santa Cruz Cabrália/BA, graduado em Ciências Sociais e Humanidades – UFMG, coordenador desportivo dos Jogos Indígenas, minha participação em jogos indígenas vem desde 1999 e ao longo dos anos fui me aprimorando em organização e mobilização dos esportes na aldeia, buscando interação entre as diversas modalidades. Em toda nossa história tivemos que nos adaptar para sobreviver. Caçar, pescar, levantar cedo para ir atrás de alimentação se caracteriza pelo nosso domínio em várias habilidades que hoje vemos e introduzimos nos jogos indígenas, bem como a assimilação de modalidades não indígenas como o futebol, por exemplo, fez com que buscássemos aprender outros esportes.
Podemos destacar as várias modalidades em que temos indígenas como atletas, mas que são invisibilizados por não representarem a classe dominante. Muitas vezes por falta de apoio e de infraestrutura nas aldeias, muitos acabam deixando a atividade esportiva para se dedicarem aos afazeres do cotidiano nas aldeias. A falta de uma referencia ou um atleta indígena no cenário esportivo nacional também é um dos problemas enfrentados pela juventude indígena que tem como ídolos atletas não índios.
Há um grande esforço nas aldeias para manter os esportes tradicionais como forma de manutenção da cultura e por outro lado os esportes que não são indígenas também ganham espaço, como o futebol que é praticado em quase todas as aldeias do País. É mais fácil ter nas aldeias um campo de futebol por ser fácil de estruturar, diferente de outras modalidades que requer uma infraestrutura mais elaborada.
Havendo um apoio ou incentivo é possível que tenhamos um grande número de atletas indígenas, pois nas modalidades que se tem nas aldeias já há um número bom de atletas que alcançam bons resultados em competições locais e/ou estaduais. Embora manter-se como atleta seja o maior desafio, ficando uma lacuna que fortalece a invisibilidade indígena no esporte.
Por outro lado, os esforços em realizar-se os Jogos Indígenas como um evento esportivo/cultural que possibilite a visibilidade esportiva indígena só tem espaço na mídia como um evento cultural não dando aos atletas um espaço para ter acesso os eventos esportivos nacionais e internacionais, mas para isso é preciso que haja um engajamento e apoio para estruturar mesmo que com pequenas atividades espaços e acesso para que estes atletas sejam melhores orientados e treinados, possibilitando assim um acesso em pé de igualdade nos eventos esportivos.
Por fim, se faz necessário um debate maior que estreite o diálogo entre os índios atletas com os seguimentos esportivos nacionais com o intuito de maior participação e presença desses atletas, que podem se tiverem suporte, concorrer com vagas em seleções, clubes e organizações esportivas.
